Austin’s unemployment rate held steady in December, unchanged from 6.9 percent in November, the Texas Workforce Commission reported today. The rate was 5.2 percent in December 2008.
The area continued to lose jobs at a 0.3 percent annual rate, far smaller than other large Texas cities.
Austin lost a net 2,300 jobs from December 2008 to last month, with the biggest cuts coming in manufacturing. It continues to add jobs in education and health care, retail and restaurants, and financial services.
Statewide, the unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent from 8.0 percent in November.
“Texas continues to feel the effects of this serious national recession,” Workforce Commission Tom Pauken said. “Nonetheless, unemployment in Texas remains well below the national level of 10 percent.”
